Gordon B. Hinckley, 97, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Sunday.
Hinckley served as president of the Salt Lake City-based church since 1995 and has been a member of its top leadership since the 1960s. He died about 7 p.m. Sunday (9 p.m. ET) with his family by his side, church officials announced.
What a remarkable human being and Prophet of God. He lived a life full of service and love. I can still remember the first time I saw President Hinckley in person. I was at a devotional here at BYU. The feelings I felt and the witness I recieved confirmed to me that he was a Prophet of God and a mouthpiece for our Heavenly Father.
I was at ward choir tonight when I heard the news of his passing. We were in the middle of our song when we heard the news. Immediately my thoughts turned to his joyous reunion with his wife that he is now experiencing. I thought about how greatful I am for the Plan of Salvation and the knowledge that death is not the end. Because of the gospel we are able to live again with our families and loved ones. I thought of President Hinckley's glorious arrival into the Celestial Kingdom. I don' think enough can be written or said to express my true appreciation for such a wonderful man. He taught me so much, and even though I never met him, he inspired me to be better than I am. He is the prophet of my childhood, and one day I know I will get to meet him and personally thank him for everything he has done for me and for this great Gospel.
